Tuscon – Biosphere, Christmas kickoff

After a brief overnight in Phoenix, we retrieved our motor home from storage and we were pleased to find it in the same condition that we had left it. It was then time to start heading east. We planned to stay south as long as possible to avoid the cold weather, but the weather didn’t cooperate, we still found cold weather.

Our first stop in Tuscon was the Biosphere. This is a facility that was built in the 1980’s as an experiment to see if a people could live in a self contained environment. It is now a research facility for University of Arizona. There were a few small experiments running, and they were doing construction for a large experiment called LEO (Landscape Evolution Observatory). This was supposed to look at the dynamics of water, soil and plant material on a sloped hillside with the hope of better understanding the impact of environmental conditions. This grand experiment was still under construction when we visited.

It was very peaceful driving around the northern neighbourhoods of Tucson. They seem to be planned communities, set back from the main road. We heard about a Christmas light display at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The Gardens is on a small plot of land in the middle of the city streets. The lighting was not what we expected, it was a trail of candles through the gardens, but throughout the gardens there were different musical performances. It was a very nice way to kick off the Christmas season.

From the gardens, we went to buy the supplies for our homemade Christmas tree, which we built as we drove toward New Mexico.
